Dwight A. Slaikeu

Dwight Slaikeu, 59, of La Porte City, died Monday, October 3, 2011, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home of pancreatic cancer. He was born February 15, 1952, in Fort Dodge, the son of Duane and Doris Cameron Slaikeu. He married Judith Ann Pierce September 5, 1976, in Jesup.

Mr. Slaikeu graduated from La Porte City High School in 1970, attended Iowa State University for one year and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1971, with training as a Russian Linguist. Following military service he worked for Dale’s Towing in Waterloo, La Porte City Dairy & Cheese, Inc., and beginning in 1987, was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a Distribution Clerk. While with USPS he became an officer for American Postal Workers Union, serving as President from 1997-2010. He was a member of the La Porte City American Legion U.S.S. San Diego Post #207.

He is survived by his wife, Judith of La Porte City; one daughter, Julie (Erich) Lear of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Brooklyn, Sydney, Madison and Colton; his parents, Duane and Doris Slaikeu of La Porte City; two brothers, David (Kathryn) Slaikeu of La Porte City, Darwin Slaikeu of Davenport; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his paternal and maternal grandparents and one brother, Douglas Slaikeu.

Memorial Services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, October 6, 2011, at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church in Waterloo with burial before the service at 9:00 AM in the West View Cemetery in La Porte City where military rites will be conducted by the La Porte City American Legion U.S.S. San Diego Post #207 and the V.F.W. Post #3983. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at La Porte City Funeral Service. Family will also receive friends one hour before the memorial service at the church.
