Dorothy L. Shaner

Dorothy Loris Shaner was born July 16, 1927, at Klinger, Iowa, in Bremer County, the daughter of Otto and Martha Hesse Richmann. She was baptized on August 7, 1927, by Pastor Louis Yockey and confirmed on May 5, 1945, by Pastor Walter Vetter in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Readlyn. She attended the Parochial School through eighth grade and graduated in 1945, from Readlyn High School. After graduation she was employed at the Wholesale Market Office at the Rath Packing Company in Waterloo.

On January 5, 1947, she was united in marriage with Lowell D. Shaner at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Readlyn by Pastor M.F. Scheel. He preceded her in death on January 17, 2003. In March of 1960, they moved to the Sumner area, where Dorothy was employed at the Sumner Produce for seven years. In 1968, she started working at the Sumner Community Schools as a secretary in the Junior High School. She retired in 1989.

She and her husband enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, traveling, playing cards, and spending happy times with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. After the death of her husband, Dorothy moved to Tripoli.

Dorothy’s death occurred on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo from natural causes.

She is survived by her children, John Shaner of Sumner, William (Deb Reichen) Shaner of Oelwein, Steven (Susan Peterman) Shaner of Oelwein, Robin (Logen) Harms of Tripoli, and Leesa (Jim) Wickman of Davenport; six grandchildren, Tony Shaner, Paula Shaner, Peter Shaner, Michael Harms, Ryan Shaner, and Hannah Harms, three great grandchildren; one sister, Gertrude Dettmering of Tripoli; one brother, Donald (JoAnn) Richmann of Waverly; three sisters-in-law, LaVelle Richmann of Iowa Falls, Maxine Benda of LaPorte City, and Lois (Willard) Jesse of LaPorte City.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Eldon “Joe” Richmann and his wife, Millie; and a daughter-in-law, Ellen Shaner.

Funeral services were held June 28, 2011, at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli with Rev. Miles Renaas officiating. Inurnment will be held at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner at a later date. Online condolences may be left at www.beckermilnesrettig.com.
